Explicit References in Chat-Based CSCL: Do They Faciliate Global Text Processing?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Chat-based Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) often suffers from limitations due to the communication medium. A frequently reported consequence is the lack of discourse coherence and by this a lack of cognitive coherence in the learning process. To overcome these deficiencies, the implementation of explicit references with chat messages caused higher learning results. However up to now, we do not know enough about the responsible cognitive processes. Although eye movements have proved to be a valuable source of information for the study of cognitive processes, they are hardly regarded within CSCL. To bridge this gap, we proposed a coding scheme for global text processing in CSCL on the base of eye movement measures. In the current experimental study, we analysed eye movements during a chat-based CSCL scenario to gain indications of learners use of explicit references for text processing. The results allow implications for a modified design of (chat-based) CSCL.

متن کاملGlobal text processing in CSCL with learning protocols: a coding scheme for eye movement analyses
Although eye movements have proved to be a valuable source of information for the study of cognitive processes, they are hardly regarded within CSCL. A crucial reason for this is the lack of suitable observational schemes. To bridge this gap, a coding scheme for global text processing in CSCL on the base of established well-defined eye movement measures is proposed. The scheme was evaluated in ...
متن کاملUnderstanding and analyzing chat in CSCL as reading's work
Synchronous communication using text chat—often combined with a shared whiteboard—is increasingly used in CSCL. This form of interaction and learning in small online groups of students presents novel challenges, both for the participating students and for researchers studying their work. Chats differ from talk-in-interaction since the composition, posting and visual inspection of text and graph...
متن کاملThe integration of synchronous communication across dual interaction spaces
Dual interaction spaces—that combine text chat with a shared graphical work area— have been developed in recent years as CSCL applications to support the synchronous construction and discussion of shared artifacts by distributed small groups of students. However, the simple juxtaposition of the two spaces raises numerous issues for users: How can objects in the shared workspace be referenced fr...
متن کاملMeaning Making in VMT
Meaning making is central to the interactions that take place in CSCL settings. The collaborative construction of shared meaning is a complex process that has not previously been analyzed in detail despite the fact that it is often acknowledged as being the distinguishing element in CSCL. Here, a three-minute excerpt from a discussion among three students is considered in some detail. The stude...
